How to Host an Intergenerational Conversation Cafe

Toolkit Series

Because everyone is aging, climate change will affect us differently throughout our lives. Talking about these differences can help us build empathy for one another as we learn to better understand and take care of each other in a changing climate.

We have developed a flexible set of resources to support the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of intergenerational conversation cafés. These include guidance on creating respectful and inclusive spaces, practical tools such as agendas and note taking approaches, and adaptable conversation prompts to help guide discussions on climate change. Below is a brief description of what you can expect from the four toolkits created, it is useful to use them in the order they are provided:

Climate Across Generations Toolkit: Planning

This resource aims to support planning intergenerational conversation cafés, focusing on format, participation, and structure. It is designed to be adaptable to different contexts and needs. We found that even small gatherings can foster meaningful dialogue, build connections across generations, and inspire climate action.

Climate Across Generations Toolkit: Running

We developed guidance to support facilitating intergenerational conversation cafés, with a focus on creating respectful, inclusive spaces and providing practical tools such as agendas and note taking approaches. The resource is adaptable to different settings and emphasizes the importance of fostering safe, meaningful dialogue on climate action.

Climate Across Generations Toolkit: Prompts

This document provides flexible conversation prompts to support intergenerational discussions on climate change. These prompts are designed to be adapted to different groups and can be used across multiple sessions. Even a single conversation can help build understanding, strengthen connections, and inspire collaborative climate action.

Climate Across Generations Toolkit: Evaluations

We provided tools and guidance to support evaluating intergenerational conversation cafés. By gathering feedback from participants and organizers, this approach helps identify successes and areas for improvement. The evaluation process is flexible and supports ongoing learning to make future conversations more inclusive, engaging, and impactful.

Additionally, here are two documents for more general information on aging and climate change. In the context of hosting an Intergenerational Conversation Cafe, these can be be printed out as resources for participants in this event:
